Sovereign Bank is the worst bank I've ever dealt with. I'd made a mistake with my checking account (with another bank) and mailed my mortgage payment in. Unfortunately there were insufficient funds, which I took care of as soon as I found out. It was an oversight on my part. I have another account with another bank and could have transferred the money. Instead of contacting me, they sent the payment back to my bank without notifying me. I received notification from my bank. I went to my bank today and the teller told me that Sovereign would probably resubmit it for payment. Sovereign doesn't do that. I want to straighten this out, but I can't do anything until Monday. Sovereign advertises that it's open 7 days a week. They are not open 7 days a week. I have to wait until Monday. Then they'll not only fine me for the insufficient funds, they'll charge a late fee for every day including Saturday and Sunday until I can get to their branch. Their customer service people at their branches are also very rude. I've been in my house for ten years. The mortgage was originally held by Commerce Bank. Unfortunately it was then taken over by Sovereign. This is only the 2nd time that this has happened, which is 2 times too many. My bad.......

This bank and it's RUDE staff are impossible to deal with. They have a loan for 1/3 of the value of a $30,000 vehicle they are calling the note due on. This is the third expensive commercial vehicle they have financed and the ONLY one not paid off. They refused to take a wire transfer (we offerred 3 payments instead of a lesser amount due) and they said they would take the money but still demand the additional $8,000 that remains on the total loans. I would like to find a person to talk with - an officer of the bank, about their bad service. I say to everyone, don't use this bank for anything as they only want to rip off their customers. Does anyone know the name of the bamk president???

My mother recently passed away and she was guardian for my severely mentally handicapped brother. My sister and I are in the process of gaining guardianship. In the mean time Sovereign bank is deducting $15.00 a month from his account and refuses to put a stop to it - his money will be gone before we gain guardianship

Sovereign is absolutely the most pathetic and dishonest home lending institution in the country. Speaking to several professionals within the industry, Sovereign is well-known for collecting application fees and then not funding loans. This is clearly a violation of public policy and shows a blatant lack of good faith. It is also bad for the Country because they are clearly exacerbating the ills of the current housing market. Sovereign left us high and dry and reneged on their mortgage commitment two weeks before our closing and after we had sold our current home.

Worst Customer Service ever. It is impossible to get a real human unless you trick the phone system by pressing the number that says you are requesting a new account or a mortgage....then you get a human because, of course, they want new business. With habits like that, I certainly cannot understand how this bank will ever keep its old customers. I am at their mercy because I am "Power of Attorney" for an older family relative and this is his bank of choice. He is 94 years old and needs help with his banking. Shame on Sovereign.

I use the George Street,Manchester, Pa. 17345 branch and find the drive through to be the slowest I have ever experienced. I been there when there was only one car in there parking lot and still waited and waited for someone to come to the window.
I also bank at the M&T bank in the same area and the drive through is always maned and you quickly go through.
I like the Sovereign bank very much but the drive through is a disaster.

Worst bank ever I've been with them 10 years. They have no respect for there customers or people in genseral there phone system and online banking system are not accurate and they will charge you 35$ for every thing they possible can even if your account wasn't overdafted even if you checked and had money avaviable. Trust nothing with them.

I have had a mortgage with Sovereign for 5+ years and I can say I would NEVER use them for my banking daily. They will call me on a regular, monthly basis on the 3rd-5th of the month and start asking me about my mortgage payment. Mind you I've NEVER been late with my mortgage. They expect payment on the first of the month but get this - they do NOT accept electronic payments - only paper checks. How can you expect money on the first of the month if you're dependent on the USPS to get mail to you? It's stupid.

I received a call today, which I returned to be asked about my October payment...it's Oct 4th!!!! Seriously! Then she wanted me to answer a whole list of questions which included "what is your monthly income" I explain that I don't intend to give her that info and she says she can't get past that screen on her computer to get back to my account without it....I am VERY IRRITATED!! I have had my mortgage with them for 5 years, I don't think they are entitled to require this information. And I definitely don't believe they need to call me 2 days past my due date when there is a 15 day grace period. WTF??

you r by far the worse bank I ever had to deal with. I cant get my acct. # through customer service over the phone which I need to open online banking, I was misinformed by your rep. via her stating to me that I can send money from my acct. to another account in Canada via western union, I and my Canadian wife found that out the hard way today that that was false. I went to cash my first check with you guys and to deposit some in my saving and some in my checking and its a union roofers check and was told I couldn t do that either or have access to it until a minimum of 3 business days after it cleared. You have everything but my blood, hair and urine sample and you expected me to go to work with nothing, what a expletive up bunch you are. Chris

The Hudson Branch was like talking to a brick wall. Open up an account OPT-OUT of overdraft-they put you in anyway. Close the account then they "claim" after the account was closed there was a payment that came thru. They charged $170.00 in overdraft FEEs alone on an item that came thru for payment of $24.99! This bank is THE worst bank ever! There is no customer service and the bank does NOT know what they are doing! I closed my account and my family members did too!!

I have two checking accounts with Sovereign, one had more than enough money to cover my expenses, but my debit card was secured to the other with limited funds. When I opted for overdraft protection, I didnt read the fine print of a service charge for $35.00 a pop. By the time I found out what occured I was in the hole for $170.00! I asked everyone I could to waive the fees and take the money out of the linked accounts, but they were linked one way, but not the other. So, basically after talking with everyone I could over the phone, I was told...sorry pal.

I finally went to speak to a branch manager, and she said she could do anything with out her supervisor, talk about customer service. I was lucky I knew her because through her assistance I was able to get back half of the fees they should not have charged me in the first place. Looking for a better bank.

I thought I transferred money into another checking account by phone and found out it did not happened which caused me to bounce 5 checks.
Sovereign Bank did not help me at all. I even talked tot he local bank manager They would not even erase any of the charges. We had plenty of money in our regular account and also have a loan through them. Please advise me what bank is more customer friendly. Thanks.

My spouse went to the Derry N.H location to stop payment on a check. There employee Amy as not trained properly to handle this task. We were charged $25.00 to stop payment on the check but our account is being charged $105.00 in fees. Now there telling us we have to pay $5.00 per day until it is cleared up. And to boot I must have gotten the run around for several days afterwards I went to speak to three people three time and got no where with all of them.

pretty good reviews sovereign! wow! today I called and asked for a copy of my tile to register my truck in another state that I moved to. I had to pay a 25.00 re registration fee. Are they the DMV how can they charge me for a copy of a title I am paying them for? lol this bank is a joke I would love to meet the president of this bank and slap him.

I can't believe Sovereign bank!
They gave me a hard time cashing a check drawn on their bank. I presented my Ma. ID with my picture on it and another id too and they told me the bank will not accept it next time because there is not an expiration date on it.

I called the DMV and was told State IDs don't have expiration dates. A new duplicate ID is $25 but mine is still good-horrible policy I will go anywhere but Sovereign.
Also my boss is the Marketing director for Sovereign commercials.....wait till I tell him this!!!!

I am sitting here waiting for a live person...on speaker phone because nobody answers. The recorded voice simply says "Your expected wait time is..." with no time. What a crock. I faxed my request for a payoff on an auto lease twice over the period of a month. No response, no payoff. Not only that, but $20 for a faxed payoff? This bank is the pits. And all of you who got rude, nasty customer service people, I suggest you get names and air your grievances in public!

We are in a retail business and so we have a lot of cash to deposit on Mondays. We are doing business with the eastown mall branch for the past 6 years. There has never been any problem with our deposits.Since this cashier " Luz" started to work in this branch, she always have a problem because she has to count alot of cash. But yesterday, july 6th 2010, she called me that my cash was short about 100 dollars. I took my calculating tape with me to her to verify everything,but then she got really upset and told me that I do not need to bring my cash to her. She was loud and very disrespectful to me.

I would NEVER bank with Sovereign Bank. I switched to this bank after hearing some horrible stories about Bank of America, but I will quickly be switching back to BOA. Not only have I had to recently deal with 5 different Customer Service agents (of course all stating different things), I have had to deal with a person at the branch who has not been a help at all. My online banking balance said one thing, and the bank is saying another. When I asked about the discrepancy, they flat out said "I guess your online statement was wrong," yet they still haven't tried to fix the problem, nor are they going to. If you care about your money and want to be treated like a human, DO NOT BANK HERE

I pulled out of this bank more than 3 years ago. Today I tried to get a payoff on a customers auto loan. This crummy bank has the nerve to tell me to fax a request which would take up to 3 business days, and in addition to that wanted to charge and additional $20 fee to the payoff amount. My advice for anyone that is in this bank....pull out. They take your money then want to charge you for information on your own account. Sovereign, you should have been one of the banks that failed. Investors BEWARE!

Santander, which now owns Sovereign Bank, has to make up for the billions they lost in the Bernie Madoff debacle. And you, the banking customers, will have to make up for the loss.

If this has not happened to you yet, watch out: you will find that even though you may have made a legitimate deposit to cover your checks and purchases, Sovereign Bank will delay the availability of your funds deliberately, all the while accepting'”very quickly--checks that you probably mailed after the initial deposit. In most cases, a handwritten mailed check is instantly converted to an electronic check' and presented against your account the next day, weekends included, even though the company you mailed the check to, resides in another state. This trick in the system' allows Sovereign Bank to charge and extra $35.00 (unavailable funds fee) for every quickly converted electronic check, sometimes resulting in hundreds of dollars in fees. Albeit this trick' is not illegal, it is, however, highly unethical. You have been warned.

Description of the complaint:
I spoke with three people over the telephone. On 2/12/2009, I made a deposit of 934.00 leaving me with a ledger balance of 2,113.00 and an available balance of 1179.00. After this deposit, I checked my online banking everyday to see when my check would clear. On 2/17/2009, online banking showed the funds were available. There were several withdrawals on this date leaving me with a balance of 430.00. On 2/18/2009 I checked my online banking and I saw that I had seven 33.00 unavailable funds fees. I called immediately and the representative told me that I am incorrect and the check did not clear until the 18th. I know this is incorrect because I am well aware of the difference of ledger balance and available balance and on the 17th I made an internal transfer to my savings account because of the available money. The people I spoke with were relentless in telling me I was incorrect and that even though the money was there, the check did not clear yet and that is why they charged me 230 worth in fees. This is absolutely fraudulant and suspicious. There computer systems say one thing and their representatives say another.

How complaint can be satisfactorily addressed:
Being that I have been a Sovereign customer for over 7 years now , I would like my fees reversed. I am horrified about what happened and believe it is only fair since their system showed their was available money in my account.

This bank is worthless. Sovereign Bank has one of the most ridiculous "policies" I've EVER heard of. I asked one of their rep's to fax a letter to my bank saying that we're up to date on our payments(which we are) so we can get a small christmas loan and they told me I had to write a letter of request to their claims dept. and include a CHECK FOR 20.00!! Why should I have to pay for information that's involving my OWN ACCOUNT?? The lady I spoke with says that the department isn't open all the time, and they would have to make sure someone was there all the time to take calls, and they can't do that. They may as well charge you for calling them and answering the phones then!!! I can't believe this is actually one of their policies. Thank you sovereign bank for ruining my families chances in getting the christmas loan for our 3 kids while their daddy is in Iraq. Merry Frickin' Christmas.
